About Sentence Counter

Sentence Counter gives you a live sentence count for any piece of text, along with your average sentence length in words. It's built for writers and editors checking pacing and readability — long, run-on averages are often a sign a piece needs breaking up. You can also set your own target sentence length to see how many sentences run over it. Everything is calculated locally in your browser as you type; nothing you paste is ever sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Paste or type your text

Drop your text into the workspace above. There's no minimum or maximum length — the count updates as you type or paste.

  2. 2

    Read the stats

The sentence count updates live below the workspace, along with the average number of words per sentence.

  3. 3

Set your own target sentence length

Change the "Flag sentences longer than" field to whatever length fits your style guide — the tool tells you how many sentences run past it.

  4. 4

    Copy or clear

Use Copy to grab your text back to the clipboard, or Clear to start over.

What it does

FAQ

How does this tool detect sentence boundaries?

It splits text wherever a period, exclamation mark, or question mark ends a run of characters. This works well for standard prose but, like any automated sentence splitter, it can miscount on text with abbreviations (e.g. "Dr. Smith") or unconventional punctuation.

Why does average sentence length matter?

It's a quick signal for readability — very high averages often mean sentences are long and hard to follow, while very low averages can feel choppy. It's a starting point for editing, not a strict rule.

Can I set my own maximum sentence length?

Yes. The "Flag sentences longer than" field defaults to 20 words but accepts any value — set it to match your own style guide or publication's limit, and the tool will tell you how many sentences in your text exceed it.

Does this tool send my text anywhere?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser as you type. Your text is never uploaded, logged, or stored.
