About Reading Time Calculator

Reading Time Calculator estimates how long a piece of text takes to read out loud or silently, down to the second, at whatever reading speed you choose. It's built for bloggers, newsletter writers, and content editors who want an accurate "X min read" figure rather than a rough guess. Everything is calculated locally in your browser as you type; nothing you paste is ever sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Paste or type your text

Drop your text into the workspace above. There's no minimum or maximum length — the estimate updates as you type or paste.

  2. 2

    Set your reading speed

The default is 200 words per minute, a typical adult silent-reading speed. Adjust it to match your audience — slower for technical or academic text, faster for casual skimming.

  3. 3

    Read the estimate

The estimated reading time updates live, broken down into minutes and seconds.

  4. 4

    Copy or clear

Use Copy to grab your text back to the clipboard, or Clear to start over.

What it does

FAQ

What reading speed does this use by default?

200 words per minute, a commonly cited average for adult silent reading of straightforward prose. You can change it — many publications use 200–250 wpm, while narrated or technical content is often estimated slower.

How is this different from Word Counter's reading time?

Word Counter shows a quick, rounded-up-to-the-whole-minute estimate at a fixed speed alongside its other stats. This tool is a focused calculator: it gives a precise minutes-and-seconds estimate and lets you set your own reading speed.

Does this tool send my text anywhere?

No. All calculation happens locally in your browser as you type. Your text is never uploaded, logged, or stored.
